Helping people – 1 on 1

I am often asked about my one on one program.  Each case is on a case by case basis and they can get very intense.  It all depends on the problem with the person.  The first thing I try to assess is; does the person have a drug problem?  I am not talking about using drugs; I am talking about an addiction issue.  If we determine the person has an addiction issue we have to address that first.  Once that is completed we

can tackle the causes of the addiction and the reasons for making bad choices.  Like I tell loved ones all the time, it is a process.  It didn’t take you a day to lose your loved one and it won’t take a day to fix him or her.

What the Reality Check Program does is open the person’s eyes to the consequences of their choices.  It works for a number of reasons.  First and foremost, people listen to someone who has been there.  How can you tell a person what prison is like if you were never there?  A person making bad choices doesn’t want to hear from a professor or a person who is just lecturing him or her.  They want to hear from someone who has been there.  ME!  Secondly, it is how you convey the message.  I never yell, scream, or try to scare anyone.  I bring the program down to their level.  I give them respect and they give me respect.  Once that happens, they open their minds and they absorb the information that is given.  I truly believe in our young people and the future of this country because I see they are smart and receptive.

The HOW this is all done is what makes me an expert in this field.  Experts aren’t people with degrees.  They are people who deal with a certain kind of situation on a daily basis.  You can go to all the best schools, get all the special degrees and certifications and they don’t mean squat to me.  The people I deal with will put up a wall and you will never get to the absorption area that needs to be gotten too.  You need experience to get through the wall people put up when it comes to the issues I address.
